MMA Antidote: Self Defense Techniques Against MMA Fighters

MMA is the latest martial-arts fad. It’s slick, athletic and, above all, profitable. Not since Tae Bo have people got this crazy about a martial-arts trend. MMA’s disciples have endowed mixed martial arts with an aura of invincibility. There is no shortage of fans who will assure you that it is the best martial art on the planet.

Maybe it is. We’ll save that topic for another time and place.

The real question, however, for adult martial artists is whether or not it’s possible to defend oneself effectively against MMA techniques in a street fight.

Kelly McCann’s Ground Kem-‘ba-tivz: Street Solutions to Common MMA Set-ups (Paladin Press) shows that it is indeed possible to mount effective, indeed, devastating counterattacks against MMA techniques using self-defense techniques anyone can learn.

Kelly McCann’s reputation as a combatives expert is unimpeachable and well-known. His website is well worth a look. McCann is also the owner of The Crucible, which provides training for the US Government and its armed forces.

The DVD has a stylish film-noir air about it. Shot in what looks like a warehouse, the dark hues of its Spartan surroundings are made starker by skillful use of light and shadows. McCann’s matter-of-fact narration throughout is free of drama and hyperbole yet has enough of an edge to let you know he means business. This DVD is about self-defense, not showman bravado.

“McCann’s lesson is that you don’t have to fear the groundfighter: defeat him with simple, brutal techniques proven through the experience of real-world violent encounters, not half-baked martial arts moves taught by Walter Mittys wearing black.”

Among the many self-defense techniques you’ll learn in this hour-long DVD are how to defend yourself against:

  • The crippling low-level Muay Thai kicks
  • The seemingly indefensible triangle choke
  • Rushes
  • Clinches
  • Rear, naked chokes
  • The mount position
  • And much,  much more

The narrative moves a bit too swiftly in some places. I sometimes wish that McCann had gone over the techniques in a slower step-by-step manner. Nonetheless, you can learn these self-defense techniques quickly and easily and apply them under the intense duress of a street fight. That’s all that really matters.

In short, Kelly McCann’s Ground Kem-‘ba-tivz: Street Solutions to Common MMA Set-ups should definitely be part of any serious adult martial artist who takes his or her self-defense training seriously.

This is the kind of video I like to (and do) have in my private martial arts library, so I have no problem recommending KellyY McCann’s Crucible High Risk Environment Training Volume Six: Ground Kem-’Ba-Tivz Street Solutions to Common MMA Setups to you (nor with your using my affiliate link).

In addition to a few choice others, I’m a big K. McCann fan. Straight to the point, no BS…it’s great material.

The MMA attitude is tiring to listen to….there are referees, padded mats, time limits, prohibited techniques, no possibility of multiple opponents, no possibility of weapons (e.g., edged, impact, improvised, etc.), and consensual agreement to fight.

Thanks for highlighting the likes of K. McCann. I look forward to your blog posts.

Thanks for getting back. Yes, Kelly McCann is fantastic and, in my opinion, nowhere as well known as he should be.
